WHERE THERE'S A WILL, THERE'S A WAY

Quand on veut, on peut.

When you want, you can--it's the underlying theme in a French children's story I wrote and illustrated, Une Véritable Petite Souris. In it Iris, an ordinary gray mouse, fantasizes about being the legendary French tooth fairy, known by French families everywhere as La Petite Souris.

With ingenuity and an iron will, Iris overcomes obstacles to realize, in a way, her dream.

The above photo is of a page from the fully illustrated book.

Expression

Avec une volonté de fer, une souris peut renverser une éléphant.  This Tibetan proverb translated to French, means in English that with an iron will, a mouse can overturn an elephant.

Something new!

Having raised Franco-American children has meant adapting to and adopting French folklore and traditions, one of the most charming being the French notion of the Tooth Fairy. In France, it's a little mouse known as La Petite Souris! Now a grandmother, I've taken to illustrating, and now writing, original children's stories in French! Meet my newest creation, Iris, an ordinary French mouse who dreams of being the Tooth Fairy, in Une Véritable Petite Souris. It and its English version, A Genuine Little Mouse, are both available on worldwide Amazon sites. Click on the titles to take a peek!

A RACE AGAINST TIME

Une course contre la montre

It's been a race against time the past three months to write, illustrate, and publish my new children's story about the French tooth fairy--before my six-year-old Franco-American grandson loses a tooth for the first time! In France, the tooth fairy is a mouse, la Petite Souris!

Vocabulary

une dent de lait : a baby tooth, a milk tooth

CULTURE IS LIKE CONFITURE

My all-time favorite French expression: La culture c'est comme la confiture, moins on en a, plus on l'étale. Culture is like confiture, the less one has, the more one spreads it around. Some attribute this to French writer Françoise Sagan (1935-2004), others say that it was an anonymous slogan that appeared on graffitied walls during the May 1968 demonstrations in Paris.

Vocabulary
la pensée du jour:  the thought for the day
étaler:  to spread out or on
une brioche:  brioche, a sweet yeast bread

Expression
Qu'ils mangent de la brioche!  Let them eat cake!
