One of my favorite citations about dogs comes from one of my favorite French authors, Marcel Pagnol:
"Il est parfois difficile de savoir qui, dans une famille, commande: le mari, la femme, la belle-mère ou la cuisinière. Mais le chien de la maison, lui, ne se trompe jamais." (It is sometimes difficult to know who, in a family, is in command: the husband, the wife, the mother-in-law or the cook. But the family dog always knows.)
